这一则故事是格林童话第 18 篇，也是全集里最短的篇目之一：短短千余字，却讲尽了“认不清自己”的三种下场。我们这次把它改写成中国寓言体，把欧式的长句收短，改用“从前”“这一日”“从此以后”的讲古人口吻，让道理跟着情节走，让结局自己开口说话——这正是自《庄子》《韩非子》一脉相承的寓言传统。故事的道理，老祖宗早就说破：“螳臂当车，自不量力。”稻草瘦弱，偏要横身作桥；煤炭遇火即燃，偏要踏上桥去，双双都是拿短处逞强。而豆子深知水性，留在岸上，反倒成了唯一平安的一个，这正是“扬长避短”四个字。有趣的是，故事还是典型的“由来故事”：古人见豆子上有一道深色痕迹，便编出“裁缝用黑线缝好笑破肚皮的豆子”的妙解。陪孩子读时，先问问他：三个伙伴里，谁最了解自己？读罢再找一颗真豆子，看看那道黑缝在不在。
