我们熟悉的'王子一吻唤醒公主'是格林兄弟笔下最温柔的版本。但睡美人的故事其实源远流长，早期版本黑暗得多：意大利作家巴西莱在 1634 年记录的《太阳、月亮和塔莉亚》里，公主并不是被吻醒的，而是在沉睡中生下双胞胎，孩子吸吮她的手指、取出致命的亚麻刺后，她才苏醒。法国作家佩罗 1697 年的版本删去了这些，却保留了一个今天几乎无人知晓的'下半场'：王子的母亲是个食人妖，趁儿子不在想吃掉睡美人和她的孩子。格林兄弟把故事收拾得干干净净，只留下诅咒、沉睡与唤醒。故事里还有个有趣的细节：国王只有十二个金盘子，于是第十三位女巫被漏请，一怒之下下了毒咒——这正是'不吉利的 13'与'被冷落的客人'两个古老母题。'Briar Rose'（睡美人的德文名，意为荆棘玫瑰）指的就是那道荆棘篱笆；迪士尼则给她取名'奥萝拉'。读的时候可以和孩子聊聊：一个人真能靠'烧掉所有纺锤'来躲开命运吗？
