The Devil and His Grandmother

Three desperate deserters sign a pact with the Devil (disguised as a dragon) to save their lives: seven years of service for endless wealth, or they forfeit their souls.

As the seven years end, the Devil sets a riddle. In desperation, the witty soldier follows an old woman's advice and heads to a rock-house in the forest to find the answer.

Inside the rock-house, the soldier meets the Devil's grandmother. Sympathizing with his plight, she hides him in the cellar and promises to extract the riddle's answer from her grandson.

At midnight, the Devil returns for dinner. The grandmother cunningly tricks him into revealing the riddle's answers: the roast is a dead dog-fish, the spoon a whale's rib, and the glass an old horse's hoof.

The soldier returns to his friends, and they correctly answer the Devil's riddles. The Devil flees in rage, losing his power over them, and the soldiers keep the magic whip, living happily ever after.
