Cinderella
Introduction
You may know Cinderella from the Disney film, but the version the Brothers Grimm wrote down in 1812 is strikingly different from the story most children know today. There is no fairy godmother here, and no pumpkin turned into a carriage. Instead, Cinderella's magic comes from a hazel tree growing on her mother's grave, watered by her tears, and from the little white birds that live in it. It is her kindness and her devotion to her late mother that earn her help. The ending is far harsher, too: the stepsisters cut off parts of their own feet to squeeze into the golden slipper, and are finally blinded by doves as punishment for their cruelty and deceit. Reading this original version opens up a richer conversation with your child about why old fairy tales kept their darker, sharper edges.

Talk About It
- In the Grimm version there is no fairy godmother — a hazel tree and birds help Cinderella instead. Why do you think the story chose a tree and birds as her helpers?
- Cinderella stays kind even after being treated so unfairly. Could you do the same if you were in her place?
- The sisters cut their own feet to fit into the golden shoe. What does this tell us about pretending to be something we are not?
- Which ending do you prefer — the Disney one or the Grimm one? And why?
