The Straw, the Coal, and the Bean

An old woman prepares a fire, but a straw, a coal, and a bean escape their fate and meet on the floor.

The three companions share their escape stories and decide to travel together to a new land to avoid further misfortune.

They reach a brook with no bridge. The straw suggests laying himself across the water to serve as a bridge.

The hot-headed coal walks onto the straw bridge but stops in fear, igniting the straw. Both fall into the water and the coal dies.

The bean laughs until it bursts. A tailor sews it back together with black thread, which is why beans have black seams today.
