The Lion and the Mouse

Introduction

This short fable belongs to the Aesop tradition. The retelling keeps the familiar sequence: the lion lets the mouse go, a net traps him, and the mouse cuts the ropes. Beyond the rescue, notice the lion's choice to show mercy, the mouse's patience, and the lion's willingness to admit he was wrong.

The forest was quiet in the afternoon. A lion slept under a tree. A little mouse hurried home and ran across the lion's nose by mistake. The lion woke up and held the mouse under one great paw.
The Lion and the Mouse - Fairy Tale Illustration 1
“Please let me go,” said the mouse. “I did not mean to wake you. Perhaps I can help you one day.” The lion laughed. How could such a small mouse help him? Still, he saw how frightened she was, and lifted his paw. The mouse thanked him and ran into the grass.
A few days later, hunters caught the lion in a rope net. The harder he struggled, the tighter the ropes became. He gave a loud roar. The mouse heard him and followed the sound. When she saw the net, she began to chew through a knot.
She chewed one rope, then another. Her teeth were small, but she worked patiently. At last, the lion could step through a hole in the net. “I laughed at you before,” he said. “I was wrong.” The mouse replied, “You gave me a chance. Today I could help you.” Together they walked out of the forest.
